OVERVIEW

We believe that creating a local traveling app to compare, track and offset one’s carbon footprint by destination, activity, transportation and food options would be incredibly useful for environmentally conscious travelers. The app would reduce stress, achieve time savings and help the traveler feel good about making sustainable choices. It will also change the public’s traveling habits in a more sustainable direction, encourage local merchants to adopt sustainability measures, and provide sustainable businesses with new investment and revenue. There are several apps for offsetting your carbon footprint for airline and transportation options during travel, a sustainable lifestyle app, and a travel app that allows you to create and share your itinerary. But there is no single app that is focused on local travel, with itineraries, activity sorting and sustainability scores that you can offset.

RESEARCH

We conducted 13 user interviews in order to discover common themes in traveling habits, preferences and challenges. We found the following areas of concern:

• Travel budget.

• Relationships with travel mates.

• Managing time.

• Planning.

• Activities.

We also surveyed 43 participants, ages 31-73, who on average traveled 3-4 weeks per year.

USER INSIGHTS

Rebecca Simmons (an exhausted and sleep deprived single mother of a 3 year old who works full time and is anxious about the current state of the environment). She needs to (take a relaxing vacation with her daughter and not feel horrible about her travel choices). Because she (is concerned about the world her daughter would live in). During the Interview Research process, we discovered that 4 out of 5 interviewees loved nature, were environmentally conscious, wanted to make an impact, were interested in sustainable living and would like to minimize and offset their carbon footprint during travel. Most respondents traveled often to local destinations. Therefore we believe an app that would help travelers create a local travel itinerary focused on sustainable options for transportation and dining while minimizing their carbon footprints, and providing options on offsetting their carbon footprints would be a great solution.  It will save time, effort and change traveling habits while saving the planet.

Any issue that got more than two users bothered was rated as high user priority. After organizing the issues by priority, the most glaring navigation and iconography issues were addressed. The second set of usability tests helped me identify and resolve usability issues. I also added additional features and updated the iconography.
